For Immediate Release Georgia – Tax Amnesty Proposed The Georgia Department of Revenue is considering a tax amnesty program for all taxes administered by the Department. But beware – Taxpayers who choose not to participate may end up paying dearly. Terms of the program would include waiver of penalties and interest for Taxpayers who voluntarily file returns and remit taxes owed for taxable periods ending or transactions occurring prior to 2002. However, the bill also calls for the imposition of collection fees after the expiration of the amnesty period. Based on the taxable period involved, additional fees of 20% and 50% would be added to all other fees, penalties, and interest assessed by the Department. The bill also calls for local taxing jurisdictions to create tax amnesty programs for all taxable periods ending or transactions occurring prior to 2003. If approved, the amnesty period would start October 31, 2003 and end prior to January 1, 2004.
